Voz Island (Ostrov Vozrozhdeniya, which translates as Rebirth Island or Renaissance Island), was an island in the Aral Sea. The former island's territory is split between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. In the 1960s, the island began to grow in size as the Aral Sea began drying up as the Soviet Union dammed its feeder rivers for agricultural projects. The shrinkage of the Aral continued and accelerated over time. Vozrozhdeniya became a peninsula in mid-2001 when the channel to its south dried up completely and became a land bridge. Upon the disappearance of the Southeast Aral Sea in 2008, Vozrozhdeniya became technically indistinguishable from the surrounding land. In 1954, the Soviet Union constructed a biological weapons test site called Aralsk-7 there. The main town on the island, where scientists and employees of the complex lived, was called Kantubek, which lies in ruins today, but once held approximately 1,500 inhabitants. The official Soviet name of this city was the same as the weapons complex itself: Aralsk-7. It contained simple infrastructure that consisted of a social club, a stadium, a couple of schools and shops. After the Soviet Union dissolved, the idea of mass destruction lost its relevance; Aralsk-7 was closed in November 1991. All people who lived on Vozrozhdeniaya Island were evacuated within several weeks; civil and military infrastructure were abandoned and Kantubek became a ghost town. For this purpose, it was necessary to select a relatively large 🌎island with a distance from the coast of at least 5-10 kilometers. Po zniszczonych miastach odnajdujemy gruzy, zaś po spalonych lasach pogorzeliska. A co pozostaje po jeziorze wielkości morza, które zniknęło? Błoto? Równina? Wielka dziura w ziemi? Zapraszam Was w podróż nad Morze Aralskie – w podróż po dnie jeziora, które kiedyś było czwartym największym jeziorem naszej planety. Decyzja o wyruszeniu na zachód, nad Jezioro Aralskie, była dość trudna do podjęcia. Ze starej stolicy Kazachstanu, Ałmaty, do Jeziora Aralskiego (a raczej do tego, co z niego zostało) dzielił nas dystans prawie 1600 kilometrów. I drugie tyle drogi powrotnej. Mimo wszystko zdecydował koronny argument – „nigdy więcej nas tutaj przecież nie będzie”. Wypożyczyliśmy więc samochód i wyruszyliśmy w czterodniową podróż przez kazachskie stepy – chcieliśmy dotrzeć do jeziora niegdyś tak wielkiego, że nazywano je morzem. Jezioro Aralskie jeszcze pięćdziesiąt lat temu było czwartym lub piątym co do wielkości jeziorem na świecie. Pod względem powierzchni zajmowało obszar równy powierzchni województwa wielkopolskiego i mazowieckiego razem wziętych. Albo inaczej – zajmowało tyle miejsca, co cała Litwa. Krótko mówiąc: było całkiem spore! By zrozumieć współczesną historię jeziora należy najpierw pochylić się nieco nad jego geografią. Jezioro Aralskie jest jeziorem bezodpływowym, położonym w sercu Azji Centralnej. Otaczające ten region świata ze wszystkich stron góry i wyżyny spowodowały, że tutejsze rzeki nie mają ujścia i ich końcem – nawet tych największych – są jeziora położone w obniżeniach terenu. Miliony lat temu, gdy klimat był bardziej wilgotny niż obecnie, na centralnych terenach Azji istniało jedno ogromne jezioro – tzw. morze wewnętrzne. Był to największy zbiornik wody słodkiej na naszej planecie: ciągnął się na przestrzeni milionów kilometrów kwadratowych. Gdy klimat środkowej Azji zaczął stawać się coraz bardziej suchy owo morze zaczęło się kurczyć – pozostał po nim szereg mniejszych jezior takich jak Bajkał, Bałchasz czy właśnie Jezioro Aralskie. Oczywiście odtworzenie granic tego gigantycznego jeziora jest dość problematyczne, zwłaszcza, że przez miliony lat zmieniało ono swoją objętość; raz kurcząc się, innym zaś razem rozszerzając swój zasięg. Jezioro Aralskie jeszcze w latach 60-tych minionego wieku miało objętość ponad tysiąca kilometrów sześciennych wody. Czy to dużo? Ponownie odwołajmy się do porównań: najwięcej wody w Polsce znajduje się w Jeziorze Mamry – 1 kilometr sześcienny (jeden!) Łącznie tysiąc największych jezior w naszym kraju to zaledwie niecałe 17 kilometrów sześciennych. A przecież jesteśmy krajem zasobnym w jeziora. Gdyby wodami jeziora Aralskiego zalać całe województwo mazowieckie, otrzymalibyśmy powódź o głębokości 30 metrów. Niestety Jeziora Aralskiego dziś już nie ma. Znikło z powierzchni Ziemi w ciągu zaledwie kilkudziesięciu lat. Oczywiście można się spierać o nazewnictwo, studiować mapy satelitarne i analizować linię brzegową. Można udowadniać, że coś tam jeszcze – gdzieniegdzie – jest. Fakty są jednak takie, że z dumnego kiedyś jeziora zostały zaledwie skromne bajorka, a ono samo utraciło łącznie prawie tysiąc kilometrów sześciennych wody. Jego powierzchnia zmniejszyła się o 93 procent. Co się stało? Po zwycięstwie rewolucji władze sowieckie postanowiły zmienić tereny nowych republik azjatyckich w krainy mlekiem i miodem płynące. Reformy rolne trwały tutaj już od lat trzydziestych, a bezkresne przestrzenie stepów od zawsze rozpalały wyobraźnię sowieckich politruków. A gdyby tak na tych setkach milionów hektarów posadzić ziemniaki? Albo zboże? Spichlerze Ukrainy byłyby niczym w porównaniu z bogactwami dostarczanymi przez dwie republiki sowieckie: kazachską i uzbecką. Rozwiązując w ten sposób problem wyżywienia ludności Kraju Rad, można byłoby tworzyć milionowe armie żołnierzy. Można byłoby ponieść rewolucję dalej w świat. Wielkie plany mechanizacji i kolektywizacji terenów rolnych obu republik kończyły się jednak za każdym razem katastrofami. Step okazał się twardy i niesprzyjający uprawom; tutejsze gleby nie chciały rodzić ani zbóż, ani ziemniaków, ani kukurydzy. W końcu, po serii kosztownym porażek, postanowiono zadziałać bardziej naukowo: zadano sobie pytanie – co można uprawiać w realnych warunkach panujących na stepie? Wyszło na to, że bawełnę. Skoro nie można wyżywić mieszkańców ZSRR, to chociaż ich ubierzmy. A nadmiar produkcji można będzie sprzedać za granicę! Był jednak – jak zawsze w sowieckiej gospodarce – pewien problem... On the way, I'm passing Baikonur, the place in Kazakhstan where rockets are being launched into space! I didn't get to see a launch, but I did walk through some pieces of old rocket laying around there - how cool is that! After a long and hot day of riding through semi-desert, I reached Aralsk. This town used to have it's harbour right at the Aral Sea, which was the 4th biggest lake in the world. Due to bad water management in the Sovjet times to irrigate cotton plantation, the Aral Sea almost entirely dried up. Kazakhstan is working hard on dams to try and restore the Aral Sea and at this moment the Aral Sea is 'only' 25 kilometers away from Aralsk. Ep6 - Max continues to ride with us to The Aral Sea, the sea of Islands. We arrive in Aralsk and then plot a route to Zhalanash, hoping we will be able to set foot in the last remains of the Aral Sea. Max and I meet a family in the village who drive us in their truck to the water. After a VERY bumpy drive we are delighted to spend time splashing around in this very important body of water. In the meantime, John gives a summary of the history of The Aral Sea. On the way back to our hotel Max’s 1200GS runs out of fuel but luckily we meet a farmer who is able to help. Argh, not another travel film… It’s been 4 years since my friend JohnTea and I travelled from the UK to Japan. I’ve 'umned' and 'uurred' about uploading our footage and photos online, purely because I can’t see why anyone would be interested in watching, well, basically, someone else’s 6 month holiday. But, as times gone on, I’ve realised how much of a huge impact this trip has had on my life, and I wanted to create something that I could look back on in the future when I’m old and grey, and losing my marbles. So why put them online? A few reasons. There are AMAZING people out there. Truly AMAZING. The people that have next to nothing, but give their blood, sweat and tears to help a stranger. Yes, some of the places we visited were pretty cool too, but I hope after the last two years, that this may restore a little faith in humanity. I hope that the people I wasn’t able to stay in contact with, such as little Anton, may watch this one day and realise how special they are, and how much of an impact they had on a Westerners life. I’ve kept the footage true to the storyline, and included maps detailing the places we stayed at, so if anyone else is thinking about embarking on a similar adventure, this may be useful to them. Or it may put them off for life. 😉 Bear with me while I create the episodes, I have no idea how many there will be but I will aim to upload one a week. This is the second of two parts of Voz-Island (Vozrozhdeniya). Nick Middleton travels across Kazakhstan to the world's most toxic environmental disaster zone, Voz Island in the Aral Sea. He follows the Kazakh water course across the desert, starting in the pastures of the Tien Shan, and hunting with some of the world's last golden eagle falconers, before flying in a home-made microlite following an ancient river course through the desert. He arrives at the Aral Sea, a lake which has become totally toxic through mismanagement of the water supply and overuse of chemical pesticides. It also has an island housing a former Soviet biological weapons testing centre.
