Basel / Switzerland is a city on the Rhine river near the borders with France and Germany. Basel is known for the "Art Basel" annual art fair and a nice sunny weather. The University of Basel is the oldest university in Switzerland. The tomb of the famous 16th-century Dutch scholar Erasmus is located in the cathedral while the university houses some of his works. We start our tour at the viewing point right at the Basel Minster where we also see the Floating pedestrian bridges on the Rhine. Four ferries cross the river throughout the year. We want to visit the Minster yet it's time for the noon prayers so we return there on another walk ( 🤍 ). We get to the city center, see Jean Tinguely's Carnival Fountain. This installation merges sculptural metal machines with waterplays. As we continue to the old town and Marktplatz, we see the the 16th-century, red-sandstone Town Hall where we also see some of the painted walls. Finally we head towards the Rhine river, see the older houses there and continue to the Exhibition Center (Messe Basel) where we end this tour. Er entdeckt Basel von oben und lernt, dass Leckerlis nicht nur etwas für Hunde sind. Er erfährt, dass die Basler ein ganz besonderes Verhältnis zu Picasso haben und schmunzelt darüber, dass aus einem traditionellen Geldhaus kurzerhand ein schickes Kaffeehaus ohne Verzehrzwang wurde. Vor allem erlebt Michael Friemel eine Stadt am Wasser. Der Rhein spielt eine wichtige Rolle. Bei schönem Wetter verbringen viele Basler ihre Freizeit am Fluss oder sogar in den Fluten, sie lassen sich von einer vier historischen Fähren gemütlich ans andere Ufer schippern. Und dann sind da ja noch mehr als 200 Brunnen. In einige steigen die Basler zur Erfrischung. Michael trifft nicht nur auf akribische Brunnenputzer, sondern nimmt selbst ein Bad. Mit mehr als 30 Museen ist Basel auch eine Stadt der Kunst. In this video, we'll be starting on the first railway built on Swiss territory and continuing our journey on one of the first railways built in France. This line beat the first Swiss railway (The Spanisch Brötli Bahn) by 3 years, with the section connecting Basel in Switzerland and St. Louis in France, opening in 1844. The first parts of the line opened to traffic in 1840, 13 years after the first French railway. At this stage, the French network only consisted of about 500 km of rails. 1841 saw the majority of the line complete, with the remaining sections being completed by 1846. The whole region was given over to Germany after the Franco-Prussian war of 1870, until the end of World War I in 1918. This led to the line being optimised for right hand drive operation, which is still the case today. Germany also opened a connection line between St. Louis and Weil am Rhein, allowing transit from Germany into the Elsass region without the need to pass through Basel.
