Galligan, who played Mogwai whisperer Billy Peltzer in both the 1984 horror-comedy "Gremlins" and its far less celebrated sequel, revealed at Comic-Con 2022: “[It’s] subversive what Joe did, which was take a sequel and make it make fun of the first, it’s almost a satire of the first one. Gizmo’s all grown up and still getting into some mischief in Mountain Dew’s new Gremlins commercial featuring the return of our favorite furry friend and star Zach Galligan in the fun new ad. The next Gremlins adventure will arrive on HBO Max this year in the form of the animated prequel series Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai. Set in 1920s Shanghai, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai will tell the story of how 10-year-old Sam Wing (future shop owner Mr. Wing in the 1984 movie) met the young Mogwai called Gizmo. Along with a teenage street thief named Elle, Sam and Gizmo take a perilous journey through the Chinese countryside, encountering, and sometimes battling, colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore. On their quest to return Gizmo to his family and uncover a legendary treasure, they are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins. Tze Chun (Children of Invention, Gotham) will write and co-executive produce the 10-episode series. Gremlins first took the box office by storm in director Joe Dante’s 1984 Christmas/horror/comedy. In 1990, Dante returned for Gremlins 2: The New Batch, which had a much lighter tongue-in-cheek tone than the first film. Dante will also be consulting on the new series for HBO Max.

Exactly 30 years ago todayOn Thursday, May 17, 1990- Zach Galligan appeared on "The Arsenio Hall Show" to promote the release of the long awaited sequel "Gremlins 2: The New Batch" The film was ORIGINALLY scheduled to be released on on Friday, May 18, 1990, so obviously they scheduled him to come on May 17th specifically because the film was supposed to open the very next day. But at the last minute, Warner Bros. decided to make a switchafter having test screenings of the film, where they were getting some of the highest test scores that they had ever got-the studio executives thought they had a huge hit on their hands (they actually DID, they were right about that, lol!)and then got too overconfident. They started thinking that maybe they could possibly beat the most anticipated film of the summer of 1990 that everyone was looking forward to more than any other, “Dick Tracy”. Of all the many films coming out for the summer of 1990, I remember "Dick Tracy" was the #1 film people were looking forward to more than any otherso Warner Bros. decided then switch the release date to June 15, 1990... BIG mistakethe film got truly CLOBBERED by Dick Tracy when it opened back-to-back with it, and then unfortunately got lost in the shuffle and was a huge box office disappointment. If only Warner Bros had not been so greedy, I think the sequel would have been as big a hit as the original-and we would have got a "Gremlins 3" a long time ago! Well anyways, even though they had already changed the release date, they obviously still decided to have Zach appear on the May 17th show, telling the audience it was "coming soon" rather than "starts tomorrow". PLEASE NOTE: Absolutely no copyright infringement intended, I am NOT posting this for any type of monetary gain whatsoever, just thought people might enjoy seeing it. I actually even edited out the part of the interview where they showed a clip of the film, just to be on the safe side...
Thirty years after its June 8, 1984 release, Gremlins remains as iconic as it gets when film fans look back at classic '80s popcorn cinema. Its star, Zach Galligan, sat down exclusively with me to talk about all things Gremlins.
Galligan was born in New York City, the son of Carol Jean (née Wolfe), a psychologist, and Arthur John Galligan, a lawyer who was a founding partner of the law firm of Dickstein Shapiro. He attended Collegiate School and graduated from Columbia University. He has a sister, Jessica. Galligan's first major and most widely seen role was as Billy Peltzer in the 1984 film Gremlins. Following the first Gremlins film, he appeared in Nothing Lasts Forever, and in 1988, he starred as Mark Loftmore in the horror comedy Waxwork. He reprised his role as Billy in the 1990 sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch, and returned to the role of Mark for Waxwork II: Lost in Time. In 2016, UK progressive rock band Gandalf's Fist announced that Galligan would voice a character on their album The Clockwork Fable. In early 2021, Galligan appeared in a Mountain Dew commercial in which his Gremlins character, Billy, gives Gizmo a drink of his Mountain Dew.
