Julia Butterfly Hill was interviewed on June 23, 2021 by Trees Foundation’s Director of Development and Outreach, Kerry Reynolds. Julia Butterfly Hill ascended Luna—a giant 1,500-year-old redwood tree near Stafford, California—in December 1997. She lived in Luna for 738 days, until finally descending in December 1999 when an agreement was made with Pacific Lumber Company that protected Luna and a 200-foot buffer zone surrounding the tree.

Flamenco is an art form that connects the musician with the dancer in an exchange of steps and chords. In this talk, be entranced by the musical stylings of flamenco musician Kristofer Hill and flamenco dancer Julia Chacon and learn how the cultural dance combines singing, dancing, guitar playing, hand-clapping, and finger-snapping to create its distinct musical style and to communicate a hidden language. A graduate of Arizona State University, Kris had the opportunity to study with renowned composer Daniel Lentz and performing artist Richard Lehrman. He developed his skills accompanying ballet & modern classes on piano, guitar, & percussion and composing for modern dance performances at ASU for 10 years. Some of his compositions for dance have been performed at the Joyce, Soho, NYU, Wave Dance Fest. NYC, Arizona Museum for Youth, and Virginia Piper Theater. Performance credits also include Reagan Center; Museo del Barrio, NYC; the Olympia Dome, WA; and Woodstock as well as many international venues. He studied flamenco guitar in Sevilla, Spain and performed in many venues throughout Sevilla with José Galvans Cuadro. Após um acidente grave de carro, Julia passou a integrar o movimento de proteção da floresta de sequóias da Califórnia, que vinha sendo destruída pelos madeireiros da Pacific Lumber Company. Para chamar atenção à causa, se voluntariou para morar em uma sequoia milenar apelidada de “Luna” pelos ativistas. De 10 de dezembro de 1997 a 18 de dezembro de 1999, Julia Hill morou no alto da sequoia de 55 metros. Seu alimento, levado à floresta por outros ativistas, era içado por uma corda. Ela tinha uma plataforma pouco maior do que uma cama de solteiro para viver. Numa altura equivalente a 18 andares, sujeita a ventos de 150km por hora, tempestades e neve, ainda teve que lidar com todos os esforços da madeireira para tirá-la de lá: eles passavam madrugadas inteiras buzinando para impedi-la de dormir, ou apontando holofotes em seu rosto, além de terem tentado cortar seu suprimento de comida.
