We’re back in Tokyo and today we will take you to one of the best, affordable sushi Omakase spots! It’s tough to secure reservations for Omakase restaurants if you’re a foreigner because you would typically have to call in and speak in Japanese or know someone that frequents the restaurant to get you a reservation although a lot of those restaurants also usually cost an arm and a leg. So what some people don’t know is that it’s actually a better idea to eat sushi for lunch rather than dinner because it’ll be less expensive! After a lot of research online we chose Tokyo Ten. They have 4 locations across Tokyo and their reservation system can be accessed online. If you are on a budget, lunch is the way to go. Prices for lunch start at 4,235 Yen which is 33$. To get this lunch option you would have to arrive early and wait in line. The only meal option you can get with signing up online is the Upgraded omakase for 7,700 yen which is about $60. The Dinner option is also a bargain for 8,470 yen and that’s $65 Us coming from California, those prices are a steal for what you get. Michael made the reservation so I actually had no idea what I was in for, and boy was it a lot. The lunch omakase came with 23 courses. If you are not familiar with Omakase it basically means that there is no menu and you must trust the chef. They serve you the best things featuring seasonal ingredients Edomae style. You will not see any soy sauce containers around, but instead, the chef gently brushes each piece of sushi with fresh wasabi and sweet soy or whatever condiments compliments each item the best. Japan is a culture of punctuality so make sure you’re on time! This particular location was almost hidden in the Newoman Food Hall. We got lost a couple of times because we overlooked the restaurant, but fortunately we still made it in time. For more details check out The Hungry Tourist: ►Instagram: 🤍 ►Facebook: 🤍 NOTE: In saying "Best Sushi in Japan", I'm not saying this particular restaurant is the best sushi in Japan, but that the sushi journey, from Tsukiji fish auction, to the middle man who the best sushi chefs in the world get their tuna from (where we visited), to the omakase style of eating sushi - it's the entire process that's the best in the world of sushi. We started off by going to the Tsukiji Fish Market tuna auction, that takes place early in the morning. The famous fish market is the biggest tuna auction in the world, and the best tuna that you get just about anywhere in the world for top end sushi restaurants comes through Tsukiji Market. We met up with Sushi Master Hiro Sato, who brought us around the market and took us to the Tuna King (Yamaguki), who is known for buying tuna and reselling on the best tuna to the best of the best of sushi restaurants in Tokyo. It was fascinating to have an opportunity to visit Tsukiji Market for the fish auction, and to see the tuna being sliced in front of your eyes. Sushi Arai (鮨 あらい) - For dinner, we had reservations a t one of the best restaurants in Tokyo for sushi, a restaurant called Sushi Arai. Our Best of Tokyo food tour had the entire 8 seater restaurant to ourselves, and it was pure joy to watch the chefs as they assembled each mini plate of food. Then it was time for sushi, and Chef Arai is a master, he literally just flies with his hands, gathering the fish in one hand and the ball of rice in the other, combining each bite with wasabi and molding them together. This was one of the best sushi experiences I’ve ever had in my life, and the quality, balance, and perfection of the sushi, is next level. Price - About 34,000 JPY ($300) per person It was an amazing day of learning about the best sushi in Japan, both from the Tsukiji Market auction side, and the distribution of the tuna, all the way to eating at one of the top luxury sushi restaurants in Tokyo. If you couldn't tell by the video, that's pretty much all the words we had to say, when we could even find the words to describe the dishes. We were blown away by this dinner and have nothing but raving reviews! As always, we love to visit restaurants based on, pedigree, ambiance, design and obviously the meal. Joji, outperformed in all regards! To start, the team! Combined, they have decades of experience working at one of the best sushi restaurants in the world, Masa. You can see the years of training as you watch the speed in which they make the sushi, it almost felt ramped up, we couldn't keep up with how quickly Chef Ruans hands were moving. That in itself, felt like art! The design and ambiance was incredible! Although we had many guests around us, we honestly felt like we had the whole restaurant to ourselves. The design was sleek, it was epic and it truly felt like we had escaped into a another world! Now for the food! It's really hard to find the words to describe this dinner. Although, it seems quite simple in execution... the freshness of the fish was out of this world. We've never tasted ingredients that fresh before. It honestly felt like they had caught the fish that afternoon and presented it to us. The fish was also the most flavourful and umami fish we'd ever tasted. It's really a 'you have to be there' to understand, experience! To date - this might be one our the best restaurants we've experience and feel so privileged to have had the opportunity to dine at Joji! Nodaiwa in the Higashi Azabu area of Tokyo is a 200 year old restaurant that has focused on various preparations of unagi through five generations of chefs.
