You proceed to read up on compositional rules and you realise there’s a lot to learn. The rule of thirds, the golden spiral, the phi grid, the Fibonacci sequence, leading lines, arabesques and dynamic symmetry. It all looks very complex and confusing. You examine bodies of work taken by a variety of well-respected photographers, but rarely find any examples that fit with these rules you’ve read about. In fact, most of these images almost read like a list of case studies showing what not to do. You’re confused and overwhelmed and really don’t know where to start. The problem is that composition is a massive subject and learning all the grid systems and ratios is only one tool in your visual toolbox. So let me give you 8 simple tips to get you started on improving your composition. CORRECTION: The Factory image at 7:45 is mislabelled as Edward Burtynsky. It should be credited as Andreas Gursky. Stareway Producer Jordan Spayd delves into an introduction to Dynamic Symmetry: where the phrase comes from, how it applies to composition, and how filmmakers can use Dynamic Symmetry when composing their own shots! DOWNLOAD GRIDS HERE! 🤍 WHAT’S COVERED? Jay Hambidge, the canadian-born artist who formulated the theory of dynamic symmetry. Dynamic symmetry can be used to induce the satisfying sensation of symmetry in an audience, even when the elements portrayed in the image do not mirror each other. When these dynamic symmetry grids are applied to the different dimensions for frames or canvas sizes, it can help affect the message the image is conveying. The philosopher Immanuel Kant’s dissection of space and time helps us become aware that we might be innately attuned to the relationships between different dimensions of space, That aesthetics is something we know at our very cores. Beauty is something that we can spontaneously identify. Ultimately, for filmmakers, different grids can be used to suggest specific details about characters and their relationships. How conscious application of Dynamic Symmetry can be the difference between a good composition and a great composition. Jordan showcases these grids on several notable films, both contemporary and classic, engaging you, the budding filmmaker, to use dynamic symmetry grids in your own personal work.
